As we begin this New Year, we must be sure of one thing – who or what are we depending on? If we depend on our own power, our future will only be what we can make of it. But if we depend on God, our future will be what He can make of it. His power will work within us to accomplish supernatural things for us.

Mathew 22:29 is a verse wherein our Lord Jesus corrected the leaders of that day, when He told them that they were in error because they knew neither the scriptures nor the power of God. What is this power of God that our Lord referred to? The power of God is the Word of God (Romans 1:16), which is the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the Word of God, alive in us and accomplishing His purposes in and through us.

Sometimes we know the Word of God, we read it regularly, but we lack the power of God. If we read His Word in the same manner that we read any other textbook or the newspaper, the Word of God is powerless in us. God’s Word is not like any another book. His power within us makes the Word of God come alive to us. The power of God cannot exist without the Word of God and yet it is not information, but faith in God, that brings transformation to our lives.

The power of God is made known to all those who believe His Word. The power that we receive, is directly proportional to the amount of faith/belief we have – the more we believe, we receive greater power to accomplish His purposes in our lives.

Does this mean that we need not do anything and depend on God for everything? No, we need to do all that is humanly possible and within our reach, but we must trust God to work an outcome that is supernatural and beyond our reach, to make our harvest a hundredfold.

Romans 1:16 continues to say ‘…first to the Jew and then to the Gentile.’ The Jew is likened to those who are religious minded, while the Gentile is likened to those who are intellectuals. 1 Corinthians 1:18 and 1 Corinthians 2:5 tell us that our faith should stand in God’s power, not just in philosophy.

How do we activate the power of God in our lives?

  • Faith – when our mind believes God, our spirits will release this Holy Sprit given power into our lives and our future.
  • Prayer – prayer connects the Word of God to the power of God. A prayer-less man is a powerless man. God will open unusual paths before us, when we pray.
  • Worship – spending time adoring who God is to you is a sure way to receive God’s power.
God delivered many people in the Bible because of His mighty power at work in them. Amongst the many, are examples such as Israel, Esther, Paul and Sailas. We must use our strength, but depend on God. God will give us unusual results. Let us increase our dependence on Him.
