Our Response to the Greatness of our God |

Ps. Justin 13th November 2011 Our God is great. The universe is His handiwork and it is vast and amazing! It is an honour to worship Him and to serve Him. Psalm 8:3-4 reminds us how powerful and great our Creator God is.- He is great in His goodness – He is good because He is God. He is not good because of what he does, He is good because of who He is, He is God. You cannot separate His goodness from His Deity. Psalm 107:8 tells us that we are called to give thanks for His goodness. He is not fickle minded nor is He driven by moods or emotions. He never sleeps nor slumbers. The God of our mountains, is the same God in the valley’s. Psalm 107:1, we need to give Him thanks for He is good and His love endures forever.
- God’s goodness is prominent right from the first chapters in the Bible. Whatever He made, He saw that it was good, including us. He has made us in His image and has lovingly created us.
- His goodness is the sum total of His attributes (Exodus 33:19). Moses was asking God to show him His glory. And He showed him His goodness. His goodness is intrinsically intertwined with who He is. Psalm 53:1 fools say that there is no God. James 1:17 says that every good gift is from God. Psalm 84:11 tells us that He will not withhold anything from those who walk upright before Him. Blessings will overtake those who walk in a way that pleases Him. His goodness is part of His character that applies to all of His attributes. Romans 8:28 tells us that in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him. Everything that happens in our lives, if we are walking according to His purposes, is for our good. That’s what Paul says in 2 Corinthians 12:7. God allowed a thorn in Paul’s life so that he would not be able to boast in his abilities. We only see our present, but He knows our future. He sees the big picture and He sees a glorious future ahead of us because He is good. Sometimes the devil tries to manipulate our view of God, see Genesis 3:1-5. The devil tried to undermine God’s goodness and changed her perspective of God. Once Eve doubted God’s goodness, she was easily able to disobey Him. That’s why it is important that we know our Bible.
- He is great in His grace (Ephesians 4:7). God saved us by His grace and mercy. God demonstrates His mercy by not giving us what we deserve. We, like the prodigal son, have returned to our Father. God demonstrates His grace by giving us what we don’t deserve. Ephesians 2:8 –9, we are saved by grace and not by works.
- He is great in His gift. James 1:17 says that every good gift comes from Him. 2 Corinthians 9:15 He gives us unspeakable gifts. He gave us the gift of His Son (John3:16). He gave us the gift of eternal life (Romans 6:23). He gave us the gift of eternal inheritance (Romans 8:16-17). When earthly parents know how to give good gifts to their child, how much more will God give us good gifts. Praise God!
How do I respond to His greatness?- We should fear, honour and serve Him only. To ‘fear’ means to acknowledge His presence in our lives. Deuteronomy 6:13.
- Remove the word ‘impossible’ from your speech. Luke 1:37 with God nothing is impossible. Because we serve a God who is able.
- We must not give credit to the devil. Don’t magnify the problem or the work of the devil in your life. Colossians 2:15 tells us how our Lord Jesus defeated the devil.
- We must obey Him. John 14:15 and 1 Samuel 15:22. To obey is better than sacrifice.
- We must worship the Lord our God. John 4:24 tells us to worship Him in spirit and truth.
And God will be glorified and lifted high through our response to His greatness, His goodness and His gift.
