We know our God as our Saviour, our Redemeer, our Healer, our Shepherd, our Counselor, our Friend and so much more. But did you know that He also promotes us? Every page in the Bible testifies to this one truth - that all who followed and obeyed Him, were promoted. Joseph is an excellent example of how God promotes His children. Joseph was the favourite son of a very rich man. Suddenly, in a matter or a few hours or days, he was reduced to being a slave amongst foreigners. But God was with him (Genesis 39:1-6) and that was enough. Everything that Joseph did was blessed. Even when Joseph was forgotten in jail, God blessed the works of his hands. Eventually God promoted him right out of jail and into a position of immense authority to save his family and the rest of the kingdom.

Prosperity and promotion is God’s promise in our lives. John 1:16 says that out of the fullness of His grace, we have all received one blessing after another. This is the will of God, to bless us. But promotion is not automatic. It is God’s will to move us to the next level, but only if we co-operate with Him. We may need to change our attitude or behavior in order to be more aligned with Him, we may need to believe His Word in our hearts. When we do what He wants us to do, He will promote us.

How do we position ourselves for promotion from God?

  • Staying committed to God, brings promotion. Joseph was tempted by Potiphar’s wife. But he steadfastly resisted, eventually running away from her before he compromised himself (Genesis 39:9). Are we so committed to Him, that we are willing to run away from temptation and bear the consequences, whatever the cost? The cost that Joseph had to pay was jail. He could have easily given in, but he was willing to bear the cost of his commitment and after a period of time, God lifted him up.
  • Praising God will bring promotion. David was a worshipper. He worshipped God when he was in the fields with the sheep, and he continued to worship God when he was king. From the fields to the palace, one thing remained the same and that is his undiluted worship of his Maker. We will overcome any obstacle through worship. David was promoted (Psalm 78:70 - 71).
  • Prayer brings promotion – We must pray to move into the next level. Let us not be naïve and think that it is ok to remain in the same level. We are called to run the race, to finish it well by keeping our focus on our Lord and Saviour, Jesus (Hebrews 12:1- 2).

Why are some people not promoted?

  • They have no expectations. They do not expect anything from their Maker.
  • They are not working towards promotion. What have you done to move to the next level? Joseph worked very hard. He did not sit in a corner, nursing his wounds or grudges. He worked hard and proved himself, both in Potipher’s house and in jail. We must not wait until the responsibility is given to us, rather we must do all that we can faithfully. When God sees our faithfulness, He will give us more responsibility. Insanity is defined as doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Let us not be insane, but let us do the things that He wants us to do and create room in our lives for His blessings.
  • Some people try and promote themselves. Only God can promote us where no one can bring us down (Psalm 75:6).
  • They are not willing to pay the price of faithfulness.

We are ‘promotable’, because God is with us. God humbles people and He also promotes them (1 Samuel 2:7). Promotion comes for a specific reason. Promotion is not given to us for our enjoyment, but always in order for us to minister to someone else. We are called to be servants and so fulfill His purposes in our lives. His Kingdom will be established in the lives of those around us, through us. We are promoted to serve.
